Massachusetts: Senators send a letter to Meta on COPPA violations
On December 5, 2023, Senators Edward J. Markey and Bill Cassidy sent a letter to Meta Platforms Ireland Limited (Meta) urging the company to cease its alleged violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA). In particular, the letter, prompted by a recent complaint from 33 states, asserts that Meta has knowingly allowed millions of children under the age of 13 years to use its services without complying with COPPA's privacy requirements, such as notice and parental consent.
Furthermore, the senators emphasized the need for updated legislation and referred to their proposed Children and Teens’ Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) as a solution to update and strengthen online privacy rules for children. In addition, the senators requested Meta's response by January 8, 2024, to specific questions regarding Meta's compliance with COPPA, including the number of reports of underage users, actions taken, and the use of algorithms to estimate user ages.
