Law: Personal Information Protection Act under §45.48.010 et seq. of Chapter 47 of Title 45 of the Alaska Statutes ('the Act')

Summary: On July 1, 2009, the Personal Information Protection Act under §45.48.010 et seq. of Chapter 47 of Title 45 of the Alaska Statutes (the Act) was signed into law and entered into force. The Act provides several measures to ensure the protection of personal data, including requirements to notify the Alaska Attorney General (AG), subscribers, and (if applicable) a credit reporting agency in the event of a breach of security concerning personal information, the protection of social security numbers, restrictions on the use of personal information and credit information, the disposal of records containing personal information, truncation of credit card information, and the ability to place a security freeze on a consumer credit report. In addition, the Act sets out the penalties for violations of the outlined business obligations.
