USA: Senate Committee on Commerce introduces National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act
On December 4, 2024, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation announced the introduction of a bill for the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act.
In particular, the bill authorizes funding for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), National Science Foundation (NSF), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in relation to quantum research and development.
The bill also aims to shift the focus of the National Quantum Initiative from basic quantum research to practical quantum applications, through the establishment of three new NIST quantum research centers and five new NSF multidisciplinary centers for quantum research and education.
Notably, the bill directs the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) to develop an international quantum cooperation strategy to ensure alignment in research and development with US allies. The bill further directs the Secretary of Commerce to submit a plan to strengthen quantum supply chain resilience.
