USA: Senate Committee on Commerce urges House passage of KOSPA
On December 4, 2024, the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation published a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson and Majority Leader Steve Scalise urging the passage of the Kids Online Safety and Privacy Act (KOSPA).
In particular, the Committee highlighted the Senate passage of KOSPA in July 2024, requesting that the U.S. House of Representatives bring KOSPA to the House for a vote.
The Committee reminded that KOSPA combines two pieces of legislation targeted at children's personal data, the Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0) and the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA). COPPA 2.0 outlines prohibitions on the collection of personal information from users under the age of 17 without their consent. KOSA provides parental age verification tools and establishes a duty of care for online platforms, detailing privacy by default and by design requirements.
