North Carolina: Bill relating to use of minors' data for advertising referred to Committee

House Bill 644, for the Social Media Algorithmic Control in IT Act, was referred, on 25 April 2023, to the Committee on Appropriations. In particular, the bill would set out obligations for operators of social media platforms. Notably, the bill would establish special protections for users who are minors, requiring that user data be used in algorithmic recommendations only when the user has been notified and has consented to the use of the data in such a manner. Furthermore, the bill would require the platform to be fully functional for users without the user having to give consent for their data to be used to inform algorithmic recommendations.
