USA: Kernersville Eye Surgeons notifies OCR of data security incident
Kernersville Eye Surgeons notified, on 17 June 2022, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ('HHS') Office for Civil Rights ('OCR') of a data security incident affecting 13,412 individuals. In particular, Kernersville Eye Surgeons stated that Eye Care Leaders, Kernersville Eye Surgeons' outside vendor, hosting its electronic medical record system, had experienced a data security incident that may have resulted in unauthorised access to the sensitive personal information of Kernersville Eye Surgeons' patients.
In light of the investigation carried out, Kernersville Eye Surgeons explained that a lack of available evidence had prevented Eye Care Leaders from ruling out that some protected health information and personally identifiable information may have been exposed, and further noted that information to have been potentially affected included first and last names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health insurance information, social security numbers, and information regarding care received at Kernersville Eye Surgeons.
Lastly, Kernersville Eye Surgeons stated that, after the discovery of the incident, it had notified individuals whose information was involved, and established a dedicated toll free call center to answer questions relating to this incident.
