Yukon: IPC releases guidelines on recent cybersecurity threat

The Yukon Information and Privacy Commissioner ('IPC') announced, on 21 December 2021, that it has issued an advisory to warn Yukon organisations against a cybersecurity threat. In particular, the IPC highlighted that this threat concerns a vulnerability in Log4j, a logging utility written in the Java programming language, which is widely used. In this respect, and as a result of this vulnerability, exploitation, data theft, and ransomware attacks have been observed. Therefore, the IPC provided some information to help organisations learn about the vulnerability in Log4j and about ways to mitigate the risk of a breach. Furthermore, the IPC outlined that this advisory is specifically aimed at custodians, as set out in the Health Information Privacy and Management Act 2016 ('HIPMA'), and public bodies as set out in the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act, RSY 2002 c 1, who are legally obligated to protect the personal health information or personal information that they hold.
