Spain: APDCAT presents 2023 activity report and requests resizing to face AI challenges

On December 5, 2024, the Catalan data protection authority (APDCAT) announced that the director of APDCAT presented the 2023 report and requested from the Parliament of Catalonia a firm commitment to resize the APDCAT in the face of, among other things, artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The APDCAT explained that the request follows the announcement that the APDCAT has been designated as one of the authorities for the protection of fundamental rights under the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (the AI Act).

The APDCAT outlined, among other things:

  • an increase of 40% in complaints, 22% in claims, and 24% in inquiries;
  • that malicious external acts represent more than half of the security breaches reported to the APDCAT, with cyberattacks at 31%;
  • the launch of the awareness-raising initiative 'Who are you? Data that talks about you;' and
  • the launch of 'DPD en xarxa,' the first learning and collaboration community for data protection officers (DPOs) in Catalonia.
