Japan: PPC publishes leaflet for SMEs on measures to prevent personal information leaks resulting from unauthorized access

On December 5, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) published an information leaflet targeted towards small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), small business owners, and sole proprietors on measures to prevent unauthorized access and personal information leaks.

The PPC highlighted that approximately 30% of leaks that were reported in the first half of the 2024 fiscal year were the result of unauthorized access and that approximately 2% of SMEs have experienced unauthorized access to their servers and websites in the aforementioned period.

The PPC recommended that SMEs, small business owners, and sole proprietors implement the following measures:

  • strengthening passwords;
  • keeping operating systems and software up to date; and
  • installing antivirus software and keeping virus definitions up to date.

You can read the leaflet, only available in Japanese, here.
