Norway: Datatilsynet announces Meta's alternative to 'consent or pay' model
On November 13, 2024, the Norwegian data protection authority (Datatilsynet) announced that Meta will introduce an option for users of Facebook and Instagram without paying a fee and receive advertisements based on less personal data.
According to Datatilsynet, the changes come after gathering input from data protection authorities around Europe. Datatilsynet also refers to an announcement published by Meta, which states that the ads will be based on age, gender, and estimated location. Additionally, the announcement mentions that users will receive contextual marketing, meaning that ads are adapted to content that users are viewing, and Datatilsynet emphasizes that it is unclear to what extent this profiling indirectly affects which advertisement users see.
