Kazakhstan: President signs digital regulation amendment law establishing data protection authority
The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, signed, on 25 June 2020, the Law of 25 June 2020 No. 347-VI on the Amendments and Regulation of Digital Technologies ('the Law'). The Law introduces 375 amendments and additions which establish further data protection requirements in the Republic of Kazakhstan. In particular, the Law provides for the establishment of a data protection authority and introduces both definitions and requirements for, among other things, data collection and processing, and the anonymisation of personal data.
Having been signed into law by the President, the Law now awaits official publication, whilst enforcement of the Law will begin ten days after official publication, save for specific public sector amendments on civil protection and emergency services.
