Rhineland-Palatinate: LfDI Rheinland-Pfalz launches information campaign on data protection rules for newsletters and email advertising
On June 17, 2024, the Rhineland-Palatinate data protection authority (LfDI Rheinland-Pfalz) announced that it launched an information campaign on data protection rules for newsletters and email advertising for companies and cultural institutions, following around 70 complaints from citizens on this topic.
The LfDI Rheinland-Pfalz has sent letters to 30 companies and cultural institutions, selected because of regular use of this type of communication, from various sectors to draw their attention to the issue and explain the applicable regulations. Furthermore, the LfDI Rheinland-Pfalz provided additional resources on its website outlining that the basis for assessing the permissibility of processing personal data for direct marketing purposes can, in addition to the consent of the data subject or a contractual agreement with that person, in principle also be Article 6(1)(f) of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
You can read the press release here and further resources on direct marketing here, both only available in German.
