India: Minister of MeitY issues statement of AI governance tools
On December 11, 2024, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) published the statement by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), on artificial intelligence (AI) governance and social media accountability, which was delivered in the Parliament.
The Minister discussed, among other things, the importance of balancing freedom of speech with the responsibility to combat fake news and ensure accurate narratives in the digital age. Additionally, the Minister addressed concerns about privacy and AI governance, sharing details of the eight projects undertaken by the Government for AI, including:
- AI Ethical Certification Framework;
- AI Algorithm Auditing Tool;
- AI Governance Testing Framework;
- Privacy Enhancing Strategy;
- Explainable AI Framework;
- AI Bias Mitigation Strategy;
- Synthetic Data Generation; and
- Machine Unlearning.
