Estonia: DPI publishes recommendations for ensuring safe data processing

On March 21, 2024, the Data Protection Inspectorate (DPI) published recommendations for safe data processing within business operations after observing multiple cases where human error resulted in violations of requirements for personal data processing.

The DPI recommended:

  • training employees and raising awareness on secure data processing on a regular basis;
  • ensuring that there are no hidden fields in Excel files and converting PowerPoint presentations to PDF files;
  • making backup copies of all important data, with one copy kept outside the main network;
  • ensuring the existence of clean backup copies of important software applications;
  • applying software updates and patching security vulnerabilities as soon as information is available;
  • logging in back information systems applications in a level that allows for the examination of various data processing operations, if necessary; and
  • implementing automatic monitoring and SIEM-type security solutions in information systems.

You can read the recommendations, only available in Estonian, here.
