International: NPC and DIFC sign MoU on data protection
On April 8, 2024, the Philippine National Privacy Commission (NPC) announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). In particular, the NPC stated that through the MoU, both authorities aim to gain a stronger foothold on their commitment to uphold international standards on personal data security and strengthen collaboration and cooperation in the field of data privacy.
Scope of collaboration
Through the MoU, the NPC and the DIFC commit to strengthening the relationship between the two data protection authorities by assisting in the enforcement of data protection laws and engaging in joint investigations for personal data incidents and breaches.
The NPC and the DIFC will also venture into knowledge sharing by providing training focused on current and emerging privacy and data protection issues and trends, and exchange information involving their respective commercial or strategic initiatives.
Similarly, the MoU will bolster the development of both the NPC and the DIFC by promoting an international certification system and actively participating in cross-jurisdictional sandboxes. Moreover, the NPC and the DIFC will enhance compatible mechanisms to facilitate trusted cross-border data flows.
