Sweden: IMY sends request to Government to investigate need to further regulate background checks

On June 13, 2024, the Swedish data protection authority (IMY) announced that it sent a letter to the Swedish Government to request that it start an investigation to review the need to further regulate the possibilities of carrying out background checks. In particular, the IMY wants to ensure an appropriate balance between the need to carry out background checks and the protection of privacy and personal integrity.

The IMY states that the investigation should include the possibility of carrying out background checks, as well as the possibility of gaining access to information needed to carry out background checks from other sources, for example, from the tax register. Furthermore, the IMY specifies that the investigation should include both actors who carry out background checks and companies who carry out background checks on behalf of others.

You can read the press release here and the IMY's letter to the Government here, both only available in Swedish.
