Serbia: Poverenik announces extraordinary inspection supervision in Ministry of Education and MUP
The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection ('the Poverenik') announced, on 10 May 2023, that it has carried out an extraordinary inspection supervision in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Interior ('MUP') in response to citizens' concern about letters sent to schools requesting the compilation of lists of 'problematic' and 'antisocial' children. In particular, the Poverenik noted that during the inspections, it was determined that the school administrations of the City of Užice and the City of Zrenjanin received a letter from the police administrations, but did not make such lists or submit them to the MUP, as it would be contrary to the procedures prescribed by law.
Additionally, the Poverenik highlighted that the Ministry of Education sent a directive to schools not to submit any data to the MUP regarding the letter in question. Moreover, the Poverenik stated that the MUP did not issue a directive for the actions of police administrations in the aforementioned sense, but that local police administrations sent the letters in question on their own initiative.
