On September 24, 2024, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) announced that the Commissioner of the OPC, Philippe Dufresne, appeared before the Alberta Standing Committee on Resource Stewardship offering observations of its review of the Alberta Personal Information Protection Act, SA 2003 c P-6.5 (PIPA). In particular, the Commissioner discussed the interoperability of privacy laws and its importance in fostering Canadians' trust that their personal information will be protected and the benefits to organizations due to its ability to simplify regulatory requirements and reduce compliance costs.

Additionally, the Commissioner shared information relating to their recommendations for amendments to Bill C-27, the Digital Charter Implementation Act, 2022, which revolved around:

  • consent;
  • de-identification;
  • anonymization;
  • privacy impact assessments;
  • administrative monetary penalties;
  • automated decision-making;
  • the right to erasure; and
  • data portability.
