Angola: APD fines COSAL $75,000 following cyberattack

On July 19, 2024, the National Data Protection Agency (APD) announced that it had issued a decision in which it fined COSAL - Comércio e Serviços de Angola, Lda, the equivalent of $75,000 for violations of Law No. 22/11 on the Protection of Personal Data.

Background

The APD stated that its decision followed a cyberattack on September 22, 2023. The cyberattack resulted in the encryption, unavailability, unauthorized access, and disclosure of the data.  

Findings of the APD

The APD sanctioned COSAL - Comércio e Serviços de Angola for failing to comply with the duty to implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect the personal data of its customers and employees.

Outcome

In light of the above, the APD fined COSAL - Comércio e Serviços de Angola the equivalent of $75,000.
