Why is AI governance necessary?
In his regular editorial, Eduardo Ustaran, Partner at Hogan Lovells, provides us with an article discussing the need for AI governance its importance given the emergence of AI technologies and the significance of the EU AI Act.
“AI technology is all about efficiency and effectiveness. An infallible tool that is meant to guide our decision making and enhance our productivity, AI will only deliver its true potential if it is built robustly, performs as it should and meets regulatory requirements and expectations. AI governance is the way to make that happen while still supporting innovation that provides sustainable benefits.”
AI (r)evolution & privacy pros: What's coming ahead?
Giorgia Vulcano, Privacy & AI Lawyer, takes a look at the future of AI use and how its evolution links to ethical standards.
“Data and its usage are becoming increasingly critical to economic growth and social development, driving a people-first culture that influences decision-making. The push for equitable technology benefits and the prevention of new or exacerbated forms of discrimination is gaining momentum, as evidenced by initiatives like the 2024 Davos agenda on ethical AI and regulatory actions like the Italian data protection authority's stance on ChatGPT.”
The enforcement of cookies
Dr. Carlo Piltz and Alexander Weiß of Piltz Legal, Berlin give us an overview of the requirements of national supervisory authorities in the EU and UK and practical guide to a compliant cookie banner
“There is still great uncertainty among many companies when it comes to the use of cookie banners. The applicable EU law does not contain any specific prerequisites for the design, shape, or color. Instead, new obligations are constantly being added by national and European supervisory authorities. The courts are also increasingly dealing with the topic and setting new legal requirements.”
5 minutes with… Wim Nauwelaerts
OneTrust DataGuidance spent time with Wim Nauwelaerts Partner at Alston & Bird LLP, to talk about his career, advice he would give to those starting in the privacy industry, and who would play him in a movie about his life.
“I started focusing on privacy and data protection law in the late 90s, long before it became the 'popular' practice area that it is today. I remember receiving the first questions from clients about Directive 95/46/EC (i.e., the GDPR's predecessor) and what they needed to do to comply. Since no one else in my firm back then was interested in handling these questions, I jumped on them and before I knew it, I had built a sizable privacy and data protection practice.”
