On November 13, 2024, the Information Commissioner (the Commissioner) published its October 2024 personal data breach statistics. The post provides some insight into what constitutes a personal data breach, what needs to happen when a breach occurs, and shares some best practices to help organizations avoid data breaches.

Reported breaches

16 personal data breaches were reported to the Commissioner during October 2024. Of the 16 breaches reported:

  • 12 were reported within 72 hours of the controller becoming aware of the breach;
  • two controllers notified the Commissioner that an incident had occurred within 72 hours and confirmed that a report was to follow outside of this timeframe; and
  • two controllers failed to notify the Commissioner within 72 hours.
