Mississippi: AG sues TikTok for violations of state consumer protection laws

On October 8, 2024, the Mississippi Attorney General (AG)  announced that it filed on the same day a lawsuit against TikTok Inc., ByteDance Inc., ByteDance Ltd., TikTok Ltd., and TikTok LLC (collectively, TikTok) for violations of state consumer protection laws by exploiting and harming young users and deceiving the public about the social media platform’s dangers.

Nationwide effort

Similar lawsuits have been filed by AGs in California, New York, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, Oregon, South Carolina, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia.

Addictive patterns

The Mississippi AG alleged that TikTok’s underlying business model focuses on manipulating young users to use the TikTok platform in an excessive, compulsive, and addictive manner, thus maximizing the time spent on the platform and enabling the company to boost revenue by selling targeted advertising space.

Furthermore, the Mississippi AG considered that the TikTok platform misled the public on the ways TikTok harms children and teens.
