Japan: PPC publishes 2023 annual report
On June 11, 2024, the Personal Information Protection Commission (PPC) published its annual report for 2023. The report highlights the PPC's efforts in supervisory and monitoring activities, as well as in the field of cross-border data transfers through hosting the third G7 Data Protection and Privacy Agencies Roundtable Meeting and completing the first joint review of the framework for data transfers between Japan and the EU.
In addition, the report outlines the PPC's processing of breach notifications, guidance, advice, and on-site inspections. Specifically on data breaches the report noted that in 2023, the PPC processed 12,120 breach notifications, of which 7,075 were reported directly to the PPC, and the remaining 5,045 were reported through delegated ministries and agencies.
