USA: Coalition sends letter urging Congress to enact federal privacy protections enabling state level oversight
The California Attorney General ('AG'), along with a coalition of Attorneys General, sent, on 19 July 2022, a letter to the U.S. Congress, urging it to establish a baseline of consumer privacy laws which do not pre-empt US States from responding with legislation intended to address changing technologies, similar to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 ('HIPAA') model. In particular, the letter was signed by the Attorneys General of California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Washington.
In addition, the letter calls for the need to safeguard the role of US States to enforce and enact consumer privacy laws while also advancing privacy legislation nationwide. Furthermore, the letter notes that such nationwide legislation should allow US States to set more stringent privacy standards where needed.
