USA: AGs announces support of proposed FCC rules on illegal robocalls

This story has been updated. Please see the most recent update below.

On November 14, 2024, California Attorney General (AG), Rob Bonta, announced that he joined a bipartisan coalition of 47 attorneys general in submitting a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) showing support for the proposed rules on protecting consumers from illegal robocalls.

What are the aims of the proposed FCC rules?

The proposed FCC rules would strengthen requirements for all voice service providers operating in the U.S. to file information on their caller-ID authentication system and a robocall-mitigation plan to minimize illegal call traffic.

Additionally, the proposed FCC rules would:

  • make reporting information to the FCC Robocall Mitigation Database more effective by:
    • implementing policies to identify deficient filings;
    • requiring correction of flawed filings; and
    • enforcing consequences for filings that are false, incomplete, or misleading; and
  • increase penalties for noncompliance.
