Turkey: KVKK provides information on alleged data breach during COVID-19

On September 13, 2024, the Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK) made an announcement regarding reports of an alleged data breach that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the KVKK, there have been reports on various news channels and social media platforms of a data breach that resulted in the data of 108 million citizens being stolen, but the KVKK confirmed that it had not received a data breach notification regarding this matter.

As a result, the KVKK announced that it is carrying out an ex officio review regarding this news, as per Article 15(1) of the Law on Protection of Personal Data No. 6698, and that it is working in coordination with the relevant public institutions.
