Sweden: IMY publishes comments on proposed amendments to rules for police camera surveillance

On September 24, 2024, the Swedish data protection authority (IMY) published its comments on the proposals for amended rules for police camera surveillance. According to the IMY, the proposals give police increased opportunities to use camera surveillance and technology for automatic facial recognition.

The IMY emphasized in its comments that additional regulation is required to limit privacy breaches in order for the proposals to comply with the requirement of proportionality. Furthermore, the IMY stated that it is important that both the police are given better conditions to fight organized crime and that the right to privacy is ensured.
