New York: AG calls on Congress to introduce warning labels on social media
On September 10, 2024, the New York Attorney General (AG), alongside a coalition of 42 AGs, sent a communication to Congress urging it to implement social media warning labels in order to strengthen minors' protection online.
The AG highlighted that the proposed warning label serves as a regular reminder of social media's significant mental health harms for adolescents. The AG cited research linking the use of social media by young people to a variety of serious psychological harms, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation.
In addition to the New York AG, AGs from Alabama, American Samoa, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming also signed the letter co-led by the AGs from California, Colorado, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, and Tennessee.
