Mexico: INAI urges Senate to reconsider abolishing its office

On November 27, the National Institute for Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) urged the Senate of the Republic of Mexico to reconsider a proposed constitutional reform that aims to eliminate its office, which protects human rights related to access to information and personal data, as an autonomous institute. The INAI emphasized that the Senate has the chance to prevent a regression in these rights after a bill reforming 14 constitutional articles was approved in joint committees.

Furthermore, the INAI stated that an independent and specialized institution, such as its office, is crucial for impartially addressing information access issues, ensuring legal certainty, and safeguarding citizens' rights; therefore, reassigning its functions to other state agencies would risk conflicts of interest and undermine the protection of these rights.
