Manitoba: Ombudsman releases 2016 annual report

The Manitoba Ombudsman, Charlene Paquin ('the Ombudsman'), released, on 30 May 2017, her 2016 annual report ('the Report'). In particular, the Report highlights the Ombudsman's work in relation to Manitoba's Personal Health Information Act 1997, including statistics of the complaints received in relation to PHIA and summarises a number of cases investigated by the Ombudsman, involving trustees that collected patient data without their consent. The Ombudsman outlined that the majority of the complaints received were in relation to the refusal of access to information, or to the use or disclosure of personal health information.
