Hambourg: HmbBfDI publishes a guide on messenger services for children and young people

On July 24, 2024, the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HmbBfDI) published a Guide providing professionals with practical assistance in making digital communication with children and young people safe and effective, in particular regarding the protection of personal data.

The HmbBfDI outlined that the guide contains:

  • data protection requirements to be observed and guidance in selecting the right messenger service with a view to ensuring communication that uses as little data as possible;
  • explanation of important presets in the app to create the safest possible environment from the beginning;
  • clear instructions on how to avoid disclosing data in accordance with Article 9 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR);
  • practical tips for writing a netiquette that serves as a basis for respectful and safe use of digital communication; and
  • outline of which information should be communicated via messenger services and which via other means.

You can read the press release here and the guide here, both only available in German.
