Guernsey: ODPA announces improved privacy protections for children's health initiative
On October 7, 2024, the Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) announced the conclusion of an initiative with Minnow Technology Ltd trading as Moki, to improve the privacy rights of children who use the company's activity wristbands.
Moki currently provides activity-tracking wristbands to over 1,500 schools across the UK. The ODPA stated that an initiative supporting healthy living for children in the region was coordinated by the Health Improvement Commission (HIC) and involved the distribution of Moki wristbands in schools to track children's activity levels to improve their well-being. The ODPA mentioned that the initiative was supported but there were opportunities to improve the privacy features of the wristbands in various areas, including:
- transparency with parents about how personal information is protected;
- transparency about who has access to children's data; and
- parental consent for the app is opt-in instead of opt-out.
