Germany: HmbBfDI publishes 2023 annual activity report

On April 15, 2024, the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (HmbBfDI) published its Data Protection Annual Activity Report 2023.

In particular, the report outlines that during the reporting period the HmbBfDI:

  • received 2,573 complaints, an increase of 20% compared to the number received in 2022 due to complaints in connection with Meta and Google;
  • was notified of 925 data breaches, compared to 859 in 2022;
  • initiated 20 proceedings, many relating to failures by the entities to delete outdated data; and
  • agreed on clear rules regarding the update of the Street View by Google LLC in 2023, namely regarding the data subject's right to object.
