EU: Commission adopts technical standards for cross-border eID Wallet
On November 28, 2024, the European Commission announced that it adopted implementing regulations for the core functionalities and certification of the European Digital Identity (eID) Wallets under the European Digital Identity Framework.
What do the implementing regulations cover?
The Commission outlined that the implementing regulations, among other things:
- set out uniform standards, specifications, and procedures for the wallets' technical functionalities, such as data formats required for the cross-border use of digital documents and measures to ensure their reliability and security; and
- establish specifications and procedures to build a robust framework for the eID wallet certification, ensuring the security and protection of personal data.
Moreover, according to the Commission, the implementing regulations will ensure:
- better interoperability and acceptability across the EU while protecting personal data and privacy;
- local storage of data, giving users more control over what information they share, with zero tracking or profiling in the design of wallets; and
- building in a privacy dashboard to give complete transparency on how and with whom information from the wallet is shared.
What are the next steps?
The implementing regulations will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and enter into force 20 days after publication.
