Emirate of Abu Dhabi: Department of Health sets out standard on the Internet of Medical Things with requirements on security and risk management
The Department of Health of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi published, on 14 October 2020, a standard on the Internet of Medical Things ('IoMT') which applies to all healthcare entities and services within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi as well as to any medical facility, healthcare professional, and support staff who have access to patients' health, diagnostic, as well as personal information, and to any diagnostic lab, pharmacy, and insurance provider. In particular, the standard sets out mandatory security standards for the utilisation of IoMT, which is the collection of medical devices and applications connecting to healthcare IT systems, as well as collecting, storing, exchanging, and processing information. More specifically, the standard outlines requirements, such as establishing a risk management policy to ensure periodic evaluation, documentation, and mitigation of IoMT-related risks, ensuring adherence to health-specific security and privacy standards, dividing duties and responsibilities including roles for information security and cybersecurity, using strong password authentication, as well as ensuring that communication and storage of data related to IoMT devices are appropriately encrypted.
