Belarus: National Centre for Legal Information announces issuance of biometric documents

The National Centre for Legal Information of the Republic of Belarus announced, on 19 June 2021, that biometric documents offering a high degree of protection, will begin to be issued to Belarusians from 1 September 2021. In particular, the National Centre for Legal Information highlighted the comments from the head of the Citizenship and Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Alexei Begun, who noted that the eight new types of biometric identity documents will be in the form of a plastic smart card with an integrated microcircuit, which contains information about the cardholder, including their biometric data (photo and fingerprints) and an application that implements the function of generating an electronic digital signature (e-ID card).

Moreover, the National Centre for Legal Information outlined that appropriate tests and advanced technologies were used in the production of the biometric documents to have a high degree of security, and to make it almost impossible to forge or overwrite the information that is on the electronic chip.
