Austria: NOYB files complaint against Mozilla over new browser privacy feature
On September 25, 2024, none of your business (NOYB) announced that it had filed a complaint against Mozilla Corporation with the Austrian data protection authority (DSB) for Firefox browser's alleged violations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
What is the background of the complaint?
NOYB outlined that Mozilla enabled a 'Privacy Preserving Attribution' feature by default in its latest update of the Firefox browser without informing users or obtaining their consent. With the feature activated, according to NOYB, Firefox controls the tracking instead of individual websites collecting information, and visited websites must ask Firefox to store information about people's advertisement interactions to receive the bundled data of multiple users.
NOYB alleged that Mozilla should inform users about processing activities, implement an opt-in system, and delete any unlawfully processed data.
