Austria: DSB issues statement on Worldcoin

On July 31, 2024, the Austrian data protection authority (DSB) announced that Tools for Humanity GmbH will enter Austria for its Worldcoin project. The DSB noted that Tools for Humanity is currently headquartered in Bavaria in the EEA, and therefore, the Bavarian data protection authority (BayLfD) acts as the lead supervisory authority in accordance with Articles 56 and 60 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The DSB highlighted that participation in the Worldcoin project is voluntary and retinal scanning is currently expected to be offered at three locations in Vienna. The DSB is monitoring further developments and clarified that the exercise of the rights guaranteed by the GDPR and the Federal Act on the Protection of Individuals With Regard to the Processing of Personal Data (DSG) remains unaffected.
