US privacy laws effective in 2023
The US privacy landscape changed drastically in the face of the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) when it was introduced in 2018. Following in the footsteps of the, then-newly adopted, General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, the CCPA set a benchmark for consumer privacy in the United States. Over the subsequent years, the US privacy landscape has become a patchwork of comprehensive privacy legislation with new laws being passed across the country. The California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) was passed in 2020, strengthening the protections provided by the CCPA and the Consumer Data Protection Act (CDPA) in Virginia, and the Colorado Privacy Act (CPA) were passed in 2021. Further legislation was passed in 2022 in Utah and Connecticut – the Consumer Privacy Act (UCPA) and Data Privacy Act (CTDPA) respectively – making up a batch of US privacy laws that took effect in 2023.
