What is the GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a landmark piece of data legislation and the EU's primary data protection law which was adopted by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament in April 2016. The GDPR became effective on May 25, 2018, in a landmark moment for global data protection and privacy law. One of the main aims of the GDPR is to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals by placing requirements on organizations related to the protection of personal data. The GDPR establishes rules for processing personal data in the EU or the personal data of EU citizens and promotes the free movement of personal data within the EU. The GDPR has extensive requirements for data controllers and data processors to comply with and grants data subjects several rights in relation to the use of their personal data.
