Hong Kong: PCPD launches data security package
On October 22, 2024, the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) announced that it launched the Data Security Package to strengthen the capabilities of schools, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in safeguarding data security and cybersecurity. This follows the PCPD's observation that there has been an increase in data breach incidents involving NGOs and schools. The PCPD highlighted that in the first three quarters of 2024, it received a total of 51 data breach notifications from schools and NGOs, accounting for about 33% of the total number of notifications received.
Therefore, the PCPD mentioned that participating organizations would receive five free quotas from joining professional workshops and seminars organized by the PCPD upon completion of an assessment by the Data Security Scanner, which will assess the adequacy of their data security measures. In addition, the PCPD launched a webpage on data security and the Data Security Hotline to provide relevant information and assistance to schools, NGOs, and SMEs in this regard.
