Chile: Ministry signs document for responsible AI use

On August 9, 2024, the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation (the Ministry) announced that Chile, along with other countries in Latin America, signed a document entitled the 'Cartagena de Indias Declaration for Governance, the construction of AI Ecosystems and the promotion of AI education in an Ethical and Responsible manner in Latin America and the Caribbean.' The Ministry stated that the document covered topics related to artificial intelligence (AI) including enabling ecosystems, education, and governance.

Enabling ecosystems

The Ministry stated that the countries who signed the document recognize the importance of cooperation for the construction of ecosystems that allow the development and deployment of AI in an ethical, safe, inclusive, efficient, and dynamic manner.

Education

Countries who signed the document expressed that they would promote education, training, and capacity building in their citizens. The document also included the exchange of good practices regarding AI.

Governance

Lastly, the Ministry stated that the document included a commitment to promote AI governance frameworks so that AI may be developed in a way considered to be safe, inclusive, ethical, and responsible. Particularly, the right to the protection of personal data and the promotion of innovation were affirmed.
