On July 30, 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Cabinet Affairs announced that the UAE Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office (the AI Office) had launched a UAE Charter for the Development & Use of Artificial Intelligence.

The Charter comprises the following general principles to guide the development or use of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and technologies:

• strengthening human-machine ties - ensuring that all AI developments prioritize human well-being and progress;
• safety - ensuring that all AI systems comply with the highest safety standards;
• addressing the challenges posed by AI algorithms regarding algorithmic bias;
• data privacy;
• human supervision - guaranteeing this is provided for AI in a manner consistent with ethical values ​​and social standards;
• governance and responsibility - ensuring AI is used in an ethical and transparent manner;
• technological excellence;
• human commitment - ensuring that the development of this technology serves the public good;
• promoting AI awareness for an inclusive future - guaranteeing equitable access to AI technology;
• peaceful coexistence with AI - ensuring technology improves the well-being of communities without compromising human security or fundamental rights; and
• commitment to treaties and applicable laws - complying with international treaties and local laws in the development and use of AI.
