UAE: AI Office launches charter for development and use of AI
On July 30, 2024, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Cabinet Affairs announced that the UAE Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office (the AI Office) had launched a UAE Charter for the Development & Use of Artificial Intelligence.
The Charter comprises the following general principles to guide the development or use of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and technologies:
- strengthening human-machine ties - ensuring that all AI developments prioritize human well-being and progress;
- safety - ensuring that all AI systems comply with the highest safety standards;
- addressing the challenges posed by AI algorithms regarding algorithmic bias;
- data privacy;
- human supervision - guaranteeing this is provided for AI in a manner consistent with ethical values and social standards;
- governance and responsibility - ensuring AI is used in an ethical and transparent manner;
- technological excellence;
- human commitment - ensuring that the development of this technology serves the public good;
- promoting AI awareness for an inclusive future - guaranteeing equitable access to AI technology;
- peaceful coexistence with AI - ensuring technology improves the well-being of communities without compromising human security or fundamental rights; and
- commitment to treaties and applicable laws - complying with international treaties and local laws in the development and use of AI.
