Portugal: CNCS publishes 5th edition of Risks and Conflicts Report
On July 5, 2024, the National Cybersecurity Center (CNCS) published the 5th edition of its Risks and Conflicts Report, highlighting cybersecurity and cybercrime incidents of national interest that affected the cyberspace in 2023.
The CNCS noted that:
- the cyberattacks with the most impact were due to ransomware that affected local governments;
- most victims were individuals and small and medium companies; and
- generative artificial intelligence (AI) is a potential cyberthreat for the near future.
Data breach incidents in 2023
In addition, the CNCS reported that a total of 409 data breaches were notified to the Portuguese data protection authority (CNPD) in 2023, an 11% increase from the previous year. Confidentiality was the most compromised principle in data breach cases, and the most common cause was human error.
