On March 7, 2024, the Oregon State Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives signed House Bill 4153 for an Act relating to Artificial Intelligence. In particular, on March 6, 2024, the bill was passed by the Senate following its passage in the House on March 4, 2024.

Establishment of an AI task force

More specifically, the bill establishes an artificial intelligence (AI) task force to examine and identify terms and definitions related to AI that are used in technology-related fields and may be used for legislation. The bill requires that the terms and definitions identified by the task force for use in legislation, align closely with those used by the US Government, and by relevant federal agencies.

Composition of the AI task force

Specifically, the bill highlights that the task force will be composed of 14 members who represent a broad array of sectors, including the legislative, judicial, business leagues, public universities, local governments, consumer advocacy groups, and fields of ethics and technology. Notably, the bill requires members of the task force to have expertise in areas such as computer science, AI, workforce development, and data privacy.

Under the bill, the task force is required to seek input from a broad range of stakeholders, including those from higher education institutions, consumer advocacy groups, and businesses affected by AI policies.
