Bremen: Bremen Commissioner publishes 2021 activity report
The Bremen data protection authority ('the Bremen Commissioner') published, on 18 March 2022, its 2021 activity report. In particular, the Bremen Commissioner stated that the number of data protection breaches reported to the Bremen Commissioner by data controllers had risen steadily since the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR') came into force on 25 May 2018, noting that in 2021, there were 196 reported data protection breaches. In addition, the Bremen Commissioner outlined that it is to be expected that the number of data protection breaches reported to the Bremen Commissioner will increase significantly in the future because self-initiated reports are taken into account when assessing fines under the GDPR, and therefore has the ability to reduce fines.
Furthermore, the activity report provides that in 2020, there were 544 complaints and in 2021 there were 483 complaints. Moreover, the activity report notes that in the area of telemedia, five data protection violations were reported in 2021 pursuant to Article 33 of the GDPR.
