Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: LfDI Mecklenburg-Vorpommern issues statement warning companies of increased cyber attack risks

The State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Mecklenburg-Vorpommern ('LfDI Mecklenburg-Vorpommern') issued, on 15 March 2022, a statement noting that the State Criminal Police Office and State Data Protection Officer have warned of possible waves of cyber attacks on companies and institutions in the state, as well as of attempts to defraud citizens. In particular, the LfDI Mecklenburg-Vorpommern specified that the war in Ukraine has increased the risk of possible cyber attacks, following the Federal Office for Information Security's ('BSI') recognition of an increased threat situation for Germany, calling on companies to increase their IT security measures. In this regard, the LfDI Mecklenburg-Vorpommern emphasised that it recommends that companies check their IT security, including the creation of regular backups, prompt import of security updates and raising of employee awareness on dealing with phishing emails, calls, and fake news.
