Macau: Secretary for Security releases criminal statistics report for first half of 2021

The Office of the Secretary for Security ('GSS') published, on 19 August 2021, a report outlining criminal statistics and law enforcement work in the first half of 2021. In particular, in relation to cybercrimes, the GSS highlighted that a total of 5,915 cases of criminal activity were registered, among which a rise in cybercrimes was most evident. Furthermore, the GSS found that instances of computer crimes increased by 450 cases compared to the same period last year. More specifically, the GSS noted that such an increase was partly due to the change in people's lifestyles and online habits, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and partly due to the general lack of awareness when disclosing personal information on the internet.
