Pakistan: Federal Cabinet adopts National Cybersecurity Policy 2021
The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication ('MOITT') announced via Twitter, on 27 July 2021, that the National Cybersecurity Policy 2021 had been approved and adopted by the Federal Cabinet of Pakistan, following a series of consultations. In particular, the draft policy aims to address the growing reliance on information and communication technologies and the lack of effective sector-neutral cybersecurity mechanisms. To this end, the draft policy proposes the development of a governance framework under which security standards and regulations could be implemented to support a secure cyber ecosystem. Furthermore, the draft policy envisages a Cyber Governance Policy Committee that will be responsible for expediting the approval of a Cybersecurity Act, as well as providing assistance and guidance on technical, procedural, and legal measures. In addition, the draft policy calls for, among other things, the establishment of frameworks for audits, compliance, and data protection.
