Trinidad and Tobago: Minister issues statement on Data Protection Act and Cybercrime Bill

The Ministry of Public Administration and Communications released, on 7 August 2017, a press release in which the Minister of Public Administration and Communications ('the Minister'), Maxie Cuffie, addressed the roles of the Data Protection Act 2011 and the Cybercrime Bill in combatting abuse on social media.

In particular, Cuffie set out the requirements under the Data Protection Act for the lawful collection of personal information, such as the need for an organisation to identify the purpose for which they are gathering the data, for individuals to provide their consent, and the exceptions that may be applicable.

Moreover, Cuffie stated that the Cybercrime Bill 'addresses offences such as illegally accessing or interfering with computer systems or data as well as illegally acquiring electronic data,' hacking and cyberbullying. The Minister also explained that following its introduction, the Cybercrime Bill was opened for public comment until mid-June, and sent to the Joint Select Committee for further consultations.
